Diving into the media world
When Isaac heard about an internship with ABC News, he knew it would be an awesome opportunity to get real experience behind a camera. Out of forty applicants, Isaac was one of six who made it through.
The internship was a fast-paced, hands-on introduction to media and news production. Every day, Isaac got to experience the adrenaline rush of a real-world newsroom broadcasting live across Australia.
It was a whirlwind at times, but the experience was invaluable. ‘Because of this internship, I have the sense I can just do it’, Isaac says. 'You won't get that problem-solving ability in too many other places.’

A different angle
Working in a newsroom gave Isaac a new perspective on camera operating. He learned the conventions of news filming, an area he hadn’t covered in-depth before.
‘It helped me gain a lot of that intuitive thinking while on the spot with a camera, which is really important when it comes to filmmaking’, he says.
Reporting anywhere and everywhere
Isaac got to work on a diverse range of news stories. But the most impactful story he captured footage for was the tragic Laos methanol poisonings.
Isaac arrived at the ABC offices at 4.00am and was immediately sent to Melbourne Airport, tasked with covering the families’ arrival. By 6.00am, Isaac’s footage was shown across Australia through ABC News Breakfast’s live broadcast.
The experience helped him understand what goes into responsible reporting on confronting stories – and how he could approach those topics in the future.
Isaac’s next big story
Beyond his internship, Isaac’s already taken huge leaps. He’s already written and directed his own work and even had his graduate documentary on St John Ambulance screened at ACMI.
Isaac’s hoping to build a career in film and documentary-making. With real skills and real experience, he’s already on his way.
